The smart fortwo cdi demonstrates just how economical and environmentally friendly a car can be (combined fuel consumption in l/100 km[1] 3.3, combined CO2 emissions in g/km[1] 88).

However, because people have different demands on a car for the city we are also working on various alternative drive concepts.

smart calls this "smart intelligent drive" and combines solutions for different needs with these technologies. For example, the micro hybrid drive technology with start/stop generator already enables petrol to be saved every time the car stops. Or you can completely do without petrol and switch to electric propulsion with the smart electric drive. smart is testing this drive in everyday use with pilot projects in London and from 2008 in Paris.

The smart micro hybrid drive technology with start/stop function automatically switches the engine off at traffic lights or in a traffic jam and back on when things get moving again.

This reduces consumption and CO2 emissions (combined fuel consumption for the coupé in l/100 km[1] 4.3, combined CO2 emissions in g/km[1] 103; combined fuel consumption for the cabrio in l/100 km[1] 4.4, combined CO2 emissions in g/km[1] 105).

A first intelligent technical solution at an affordable price that is available today.

Electric drive is particularly well-suited to city traffic as it is emission-free, quiet and easy to handle.

The advantages.

The vehicle combines 0g of CO2 emissions with exceptionally low running costs. The battery is quickly charged and provides a range of over 100 kilometres.

smart is testing this drive in everyday use with pilot projects in London and further projects planned. The aim is to start series production as soon as a lithium-ion battery technology is available which meets all our requirements.

Electric drive technology offers us a chance to further reduce our CO2 emissions on a sustained basis.
